With thousands upon thousands of talented photographers constantly generating quality images, stock photos are definitely on their way out from their awkward 90's and early 2000's phase. Recently I took a chance with Dreamstime stock photos, and five of my images (the ones in this post) were accepted to their library. Stock can be a great way for photographers to earn secondary income from commercial work not licensed by clients, and otherwise 'everyday' projects and photos. Also, in my case, stock's a great reminder to make every shot count: images taken just for funsies may be exactly what an editor, designer, or art director needs to bring their stories to life.
